Perth Museum & Art Gallery has been in existence since the late 19th century when it was founded by the Perth Literary and Antiquarian Society. In the early 20th century that Society transferred its collections to the local authority, today Perth & Kinross Council. The Museum is managed, on behalf of the Council, by a trust, Culture Perth & Kinross.

The Museum's collecting ambitions had a global reach in the 19th century creating a legacy of an internationally recognised world cultures collection. One of the strengths of that collection is its North American material, particularly the group of items collected in the early 19th century by David Ramsay, born and raised in Perth and who worked for many years for the Hudson Bay Company. He collected particularly from the NW Coast region, especially Salish, Haida and Tlingit.

Regions Included in North American Collections

  • Arctic

  • Subarctic

  • Northwest Coast

  • Great Plains

Resources

  • Currently the Perth Museum is not able to provide funding for visiting researchers. However we do welcome visitors to see the collections - making contact well in advance is essential so that a visit can be planned and accommodated. We do consider loans to recognised museum institutions and artefacts from our collections have been on loan to museums in Canada and the USA in recent years.
